How To Repair Timer For Kenmore 90 Series Washer Agitator

This washer is two months over ten years old and just this week i noticed it seemed to be taking longer than usual to complete a wash cycle. Yesterday it became stuck in the agitate cycle and would not advance to rinse or spin. I tried stopping the cycle and manually advancing the knob to rinse and spin but it just kept agitating when i would turn the washer back on. I'm hoping it is simply an issue with the timer but would appreciate any insight anyone can offer. It has been a great simple washing machine and i'd rather fix than have to replace.

Many thanks in advance.

So in drain/spin it does nothing but agitate in any cycle?

Does the tub spin while its agitating?

Hey Jake.
It just goes on doing the usual action during the cleaning cycle without progressing to the rinse or spin cycles. I didn't notice if the tub was spinning. It had gotten quite hot and there was a bit of a burning smell like it was overheating the motor perhaps?

Use a screwdriver to push down on the lid switch and watch what it does in the spin cycle.

It could be the timer, motor, or gearcase.

So I tested it with the lid open and determined I can cycle through all the functions manually but the timer does not advance by itself.
If you start the cycle as you would a regular load of laundry it just agitates forever. I advanced to just before rinse and the water drained. I advanced the timer to rinse and the machine filled with water and then did the rinse agitation. I kept going through the whole wash cycle including spin and all the functions seem to work fine. I did notice a slight overheating smell toward the end of the rinse agitation.
Thanks again for your help.
